Yankees Dominate Orioles In 13-2 Victory

There was rain. Lots and lots of rain, but that didn’t stop the Yankees from beating down on the Orioles 13-2 behind CC Sabathia (4-3) who pitched an 8 inning shutout. After there was a 48 minute rain delay, the Yankees were ready to go. In the first inning Derek Jeter led off with a double and Curtis Granderson had a triple, which scored Jeter. Mark Teixeira grounded out, but was able to bring Curtis Granderson home. Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch, Russell Martin walked and Jorge Posada walked which brings us to Nick Swisher. Nick Swisher had a bases clearing double which gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead.
In the4th, Swisher walked which brought up Brett Gardner who was batting .377 in the last 22 games becoming the Yankees hottest hitter. Getting a bit hit Gardner did, as he scorched an RBI triple to extend the Yankees lead to 6-0. Derek Jeter came up with an RBI triple which scored Gardner. Mark Teixeira homered which gave the Yankees a 9-0 lead. In the fifth the bases were loaded again with Cano, Martin and Posada. This is where Nick Swisher became a clutch hitter once again. He singled on a ground ball which scored Robinson Cano giving the Yankees a 10-0 lead. In the 6th inning Jorge Posada doubled and brought home Robinson Cano who was on base for a third time. The icing on the cake was in the 9th inning when Brett Gardner singled on a ground ball. The next batter was Eduardo Nunez, and he did the unthinkable; he hit a home run. The game was sealed for the Yankees at 13 runs. CC’s night was done after 8 innings and the Yankees brought Amauri Sanit to pitch. He gave up two runs but it could have been more if Gardner hadn’t flashed the leather and stopped the bleeding. Yankees had won there third game in a row and took the Baltimore series. Baltimore this season is 0-6 against the Yankees.
What’s Next: Yankees come back to New York and inter-league play starts with the Yankees taking on the New York Mets in Yankee Stadium, R.A Dickey gets the start for the Mets while Freddy Garcia gets the start for the Yankees.
Note: Jorge Posada had his 17th career start at first base while Mark Teixeira took over DH duties in the series finale against the Orioles; Jeremy Guthrie was scheduled to pitch the series finale but due to pitching in the 15th inning he was replaced by Brad Bergesen who pitched 3 1/3 and gave up 8 runs on 5 hits. In the 9th inning was the first time that all three catchers (Francisco Cervelli, Martin, Posada) were on the field together. Cervelli was behind the plate, Martin was at third and Jorge Posada was at first. Russell Martin was charged with an error in the 9th for booting the game ending double play ball.
A-Rod & Gardner Help Yanks Snap 6 Game Skid With 6-2 Victory

Coming into tonight’s game, no one would have thought that Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner would be the ones to stop the bleeding to a Yankees 6 game skid, as they defeated James Shields (4-2) in a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The game was tied going into the third when the Rays took a quick 1-0 lead over the Yankees with an Elliot Johnson home run, but the Yankees were quick enough to tie the game at one in the 4th after A-Rod hit it out, showing signs that the home run power was still there. A-Rod then homered again in the 6th inning. The Yankees scored 2 runs in the 6th giving them a 4-1 lead, helped by Jorge Posada’s 2 for 3 night and a beautifully placed bunt single by Brett Gardner. Yankees had gotten into a jam in the 6th when Ivan Nova (4-3) had the bases loaded which was when David Robertson was summoned from the bullpen. Robertson struck out both B.J Upton and Casey Kotchman preserving the Yankees lead by 3. The Yankees got two more in the 9th with a Russell Martin base hit, a Brett Gardner double and a Derek Jeter single which gave the Yankees a 6-1 lead.
In the 9th, the Rays stumbled into some trouble when Gardner made a catch, but wearily looked towards Curtis Granderson. The Rays thought that the ball hit the catwalk, which in Tropicana Field signifies a home run. Umpires took it to the video room and looked at the replay. The play was called an out and Gardner had made the catch. Rays scored 1 run in the 9th before turning the ball over to Mo who got former Yankee Johnny Damon to ground out, snapping the 6 game skid.
Note: This is Brett Gardner’s first 3 hit game this season. He raised his average to .265 surpassing Jeter, Teixeira, Rodriguez and Martin; After striking out three times, Jeter got a base hit, giving him 34 hits til 3,000; This is A-Rod’s first homer game since April 24th; After Saturday’s controversial day for Jorge Posada, he had a 2 for 3 night with a double and a single; Nick Swisher sat out tonights game with a stomach virus. Girardi said that Swisher was throwing up the night before which prompted Girardi to call up Chris Dickerson from AAA Scranton; Rafael Soriano was placed on the 15 day DL with elbow soreness. MRI’s were done and the tests shown inflammation. Soriano expects to start throwing in 10 days prior to coming off the DL.
Burnett Blows Lead as Yanks Have A 6 Game Skid

A.J Burnett was dealing. The Yankees had scored 5 runs, they knocked out David Price and they were looking to break there 5 game skid…until Burnett ran out of gas. In the 6th inning, the Rays came in trailing 5-1; they exited the inning leading 6-5. Burnett had given up a double to John Jaso, a two run homer by Sam Fuld, a 2 run homer to B.J Upton and Evan Longoria scored on an RBI. The Yankees were retired quickly in the 7th, 8th and 9th making this the first 6 game skid during Joe Girardi’s career with the Yankees.
Note: Curtis Granderson connected with his 14th homer of the season; Brett Gardner was given the day off along with Jorge Posada. Posada’s day off was because Price (a lefty) was on the mound, while Gardner had played a week straight.; Derek Jeter was hitless so his streak stays at 35.
Nova Stifles Rangers In 4-1 Yankees Victory
For the third straight start, Ivan Nova (3-2) had pitched flawlessly and this time he has a win to show for it. He pitched a career high 7 1/3 innings with only 2 hits as the Yankees beat the Rangers 4-1.
3 of the 4 Yankee runs came on home runs by Curtis Granderson, a 2 run shot in the first inning and a solo home run in the 7th inning. The other Yankee run scored without a hit. Jorge Posada and Russell Martin both walked, but Brett Gardner bunted into a force play which got Posada out at third. Derek Jeter was on base when he grounded right back to Matt Harrison (3-4) but Harrison threw wildly, sending Martin home, Gardner to third and Jeter to first. The run was unearned.
The only Rangers run was unearned in the 8th inning when Mark Teixeira made a rare error, scoring Mike Napoli. The Yankees had secure there 18th win this season. Bartolo Colon takes the mount tonight against Derek Holland at 8:05 in the Ballpark in Arlington.
Note: Brett Gardner was scheduled to have the day off last night, but Nick Swisher was ill, giving Gardner his second start against a left hander; Eric Chavez was placed on the 15 day DL after breaking his pinky toe; Ramiro Pena was bought up from Triple A Scranton to take Chavez’s place on the roster; Kevin Russo was designated for assignment yesterday to make room for Jess Todd who they claimed on waivers from Cleveland.
CC Hammered As Yanks Fall To Tigers 4-2
CC Sabathia (2-2) didn’t look his sharpest against the Tigers, which lead to there early downfall in Comerica Park on Tuesday Night.
First pitch swinging the ice cold Austin Jackson hit a double on the left center field wall, and things did not get better from there. Scott Sizemore who was called up earlier today had a double before the struggling Magglio Ordonez grounded to shortstop to bring Austin Jackson home. Miguel Cabrera hit a fly ball sending Sizemore home, but the Tigers weren’t done.
In the fourth inning, Russell Martin doubled off of Brad Penny (2-3) scoring Jorge Posada, but this was when the Yankees base running got atrocious. Brett Gardner flied out to left field before Andruw Jones decided to try for home plate only to be called out and charging Gardner with the double play thus ending the inning.
The Tigers scored 2 more times in the fifth when Austin Jackson tripled scoring Brandon Inge and Scott Sizemore singling on a line drive to Andruw Jones scoring Jackson.
The Yankees had horrible base running in the 6th inning, starting with a force out by Robinson Cano. On a wild pitch, Cano decided to go to second, but stopped in the midst, before ending up a dead duck and getting tagged out. While Andruw Jones was at bat, Jorge Posada tried to steal second, but was caught by Scott Sizemore.
The Yankees were able to cut the lead to two when Mark Teixeira homered in the top of the eighth inning, but that was all the Yankees were going to get. In the ninth the Yankees pinch hit Jones for Nick Swisher who had gotten on with a walk, but Russell Martin grounded into a double play ending the game. Jose Valverde for the Tigers got the save.
Note: It has been 6 years ago today that Robinson Cano had been called up for the Yankees. Cano was 0 for 4 today; Jorge Posada raised his batting average to .167 going 2 for 4 today; Brett Gardner now has a seven game hitting streak and is now batting .219; Derek Jeter had a hit today making his magic number 48.
Yankees Overcome Tigers In 5-3 Victory
The Yankees had some breaks but they couldn’t capitalize on most of them. Yesterday the Yankees were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position but were able to get the job done against the Tigers.
In the first inning Jorge Posada hit a two run double scoring Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira, but caught a bad break when the ball hopped over the fence, making it a ground rule double and sending Nick Swisher back to third base. There would have been another run in the inning, but Derek Jeter was caught stealing at second base.
In the second inning Brett Gardner started the inning with a ground ball to the right side for a base hit followed by Eduardo Nunez doubling on a line drive to third. While Gardner scored, Nunez was thrown out at third trying to get a triple.
The Tigers came right back when Alex Avillia homered not once, but twice in the ball game, giving the Tigers an opportunity to tie the game. The Yankees had left runners on without getting the job done, giving the Tigers a chance to tie the ball game in the seventh. The Yankees however were able to take the lead again for the final time that night in the ninth inning.
The ninth inning started with a walk to Curtis Granderson, but while Mark Teixeira was batting, Granderson stole second then over-slid the bag and was tagged out. Mark Teixeira was then walked, giving the slumping Alex Rodriguez a chance to do some damage. Alex singled on a ball that was booted by Brandon Inge, sending Tex to second and A-Rod to first. The Yankees broke it wide open on a line drive by Nick Swisher, scoring Mark Teixeira and sending A-Rod to third. The run that broke the game open was while Russell Martin was batting, Jose Valverde (2-1) threw a pass ball that sent A-Rod home. Mariano Rivera got the final three outs of the ninth, sending the Yankees to there seventeenth win this season. Joba Chamberlain got the win after an effective start by Bartolo Colon.
Note: Robinson Cano expects to play in Tuesday Nights game after sitting out with a bruised hand; Jorge Posada raised his average to .150 yesterday after batting 2 for 4 on the night; Brett Gardner raised his average to .211 and has a six game hitting streak.
Nova Outshines Litsch In Yankees 5-2 Victory
The New York Yankees wanted to leave this home stand with a bang, and certainty they did against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The pitching match-up seemed a little threatening. It was Ivan Nova (1-2) against Jesse Litsch (2-1) and fans were wondering if Nova was going to get a win. In the first inning after Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson grounded out and struck out, Mark Teixeira hit a home run giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead, but they didn’t keep the lead for long when Adam Lind hit a home run that snaked the foul pole to tie the game.
The Blue Jays were in the lead in the third inning when Rajai Davis manufactured his own run by earning a walk, swiping second and third and coming home on a Jose Bautista ground ball to shortstop. The Yankees didn’t take it lying down and in the 5th inning the Yankees scored 4 runs.
It started on a Jorge Posada double and Brett Gardner single. Posada scored on a Derek Jeter’s fielders choice only Yunel Escobar couldn’t get Gardner at third. Curtis Granderson put the finishing touches by blasting a 3 run shot giving the Yankees the lead for the rest of the game.
After Joe Girardi used Chamberlain yesterday, he gave him the day off and went to David Robertson in the 7th inning. Robertson went a third of an inning on a strikeout, but there were 2 runners on and 2 outs thus Girardi bringing in Boone Logan. A ground ball came right back to Boone Logan, but he unknowingly caught the baseball before throwing it to first to get out of the jam. Rafael Soriano had a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera had a perfect ninth to give the Yankees there 16th victory of the season.
Note: Eric Chavez pinch hit for Robinson Cano in the 7th inning. The cause was a bruised hand, Girardi said that Cano was day to day; Phil Hughes goes to see specialists in St. Louis tomorrow; Brett Gardner had a perfect day today with a single and 2 walks. His average is now .200; Jorge Posada had his first extra base hit today raising his average to .133.
Cano’s 2 Homers, Gardner’s 2 Rallies Not Enough In Yankees 5-3 Loss To Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays were in town, and they made a first impression on the New York Yankees. The battle was between Ricky Romero (2-3) and Freddy Garcia (1-1) and while there was offense that went around, the Yankees couldn’t capitalize.
The Yankees had taken an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Russell Martin doubled on a fly ball which scored Robinson Cano, but Garcia gave up the lead in the top of the third when the hot hitting Jose Bautista clobbered a 2 run shot, putting the Blue Jays ahead and never looking back. Brett Gardner who had been getting his average up, had started 2 bases loaded rallies by hitting an infield single in the 5th and walked twice, but the middle order hence Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira, couldn’t score any runs.
Note: Jorge Posada was benched today in favor of Andruw Jones but Jones made Joe Girardi regret his decision by striking out three times; Coming into today’s game the only Yankee with good numbers against Ricky Romero was Brett Gardner who was 4 for 9 with a home run (Grand Slam, July 3, 2010); Derek Jeter had one hit today making his magic number 51; Mark Teixeira entered the lineup today after complaining of shoulder aches the last couple of days; This is the third game this week that Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner had combined to become the offensive duo; Fransisco Cervelli was activated today with the Yankees sending down Gustavo Molina to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.
Bartolo Colon Phases Chi-Sox in 3-1 Yankees Victory
The New York Yankees don’t have much to worry about when it comes to there starting rotation. The latest New York Yankee to have an excellent outing was Bartolo Colon who is filling in for the ailing Phil Hughes.
Colon (2-1) pitched a career high 8 innings while only allowing one run on seven hits and six strikeouts. The Yankees offense wasn’t as quiet as it was the previous two days when in the first inning after Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez made it on base, Robinson Cano belted a 3 run home run against Mark Buehrle (1-3), giving the Yankees the lead for the whole game.
Mariano Rivera pitched the 9th inning and earned his 8th save of the season.
Note: Mark Teixeira was lifted from the game in the 8th inning and replaced by Eric Chavez. No word yet on why Tex was pulled; Derek Jeter needs 52 hits to reach 3,000 hits; Jorge Posada average wise is the worst hitting starter with an .138 average.
Update: Mark Teixeira had hurt his shoulder yesterday on a diving play, dove again today and it started hurting. So far he’s day to day.
Gardner, Rodriguez Show Power As Yankees rout Orioles 15-3
Since the beginning of the season, the Yankees had not been hitting together as a team, BUT they had the home run ball working for them. Yesterday the Yankees had not 1 or 2 but 5 home run bombs from 4 different players: Russell Martin who homered twice, Jorge Posada, Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner.
The Yankees first scored in the first inning when A-Rod doubled off the wall in right field, sending Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira home for an early 2-0 lead. Then Robinson Cano doubled A-Rod home to make it 3-0 Yankees. After Brett Gardner’s double in the second inning, Brad Bergensen (0-3) shut down the Yankees for a couple of innings, until he gave up a three run home run to Russell Martin, making the game 6-0 Yankees.
The Orioles had came back though in the 6th when Adam Jones hit a three run home run against CC Sabathia (1-1). It would be the only time that the Orioles would score though.
In the 8th inning, the Yankees capped 7 runs in that inning, before that inning being the only Major League team to not score more than 5 runs in an inning. This included back to back home runs by Jorge Posada and Russell Martin followed by a Grand Slam to Alex Rodriguez after Jeter walked, Curtis Granderson had a clean single and Teixeira singled.
The 9th inning put the finishing touched to the game when Russell Martin was plunked in the back by Josh Rupe. All of the New York Yankees were so outraged they began to plan retaliation, but Brett Gardner had another idea in mind. On a 2-1 fastball, he connected for his first home run of the season towards right field. The Yankees are now 11-6 pushing the Orioles to last place with an 8-11 record.
