Brett Gardner gives Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira a high five as the Yankees celebrate their 6-5 win over Boston in 10 innings in the first game of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.
Today, many fans are now thinking that without Brett Gardner, the Yankees wouldn’t have ever gotten that run. In the 10th inning, Jonathan Pabelbon had given up a walk in the top of the 10th inning to Brett Gardner. Ramiro Pena had bunted Gardner over to second and Derek Jeter had an infield single where Brett Gardner hustled around the third baseline and Gardner scored.
The winner of the game had been Phil Hughes (18-8), who had pitched in the 9th inning and was still the pitcher in play while Gardner scored in the 10th inning. The pitchers used in the Yankees game was Andy Pettite, David Robertson, Boone Logan, Joba Chamberlain, Kerry Wood, Phil Hughes and Mariano Rivera.
Pettite had given Boston’s 3 runs, 2 in the first inning and 1 in the 4th inning. Logan had given one run in the seventh and Kerry Wood in the 8th inning. The Yankees had scored 3 in the 3rd inning, 2 in the fifth and the lead run in the 10th.
Though the Yankees have won the first game, the Yankees have no time to celebrate. Game 2 is slated to start at 9:15, just 30 minutes after the first game had ended. Tampa Bay is currently winning, so if the Yankees win Game 2, then they will be in first place by a game.
