While Freddy Garcia (1-2) had pitched a good game for the Yankees only allowing 4 runs on 10 hits with 8 strikeouts, his competition Max Scherzer (5-0) pitched much better. The Tigers were able to stifle the New York Yankees’s potent offensive lineup, by striking out 9 of them and only walking two.

The Tigers scored there four runs on a line drive by Jhonny Peralta in the second inning, which scored Victor Martinez who had just returned yesterday from the DL. In the third inning Miguel Cabrera doubled on a ground ball which brought home Brennan Boesch. Two batter later the ice cold Magglio Ordonez crushed a two run shot making the lead 4-0. The Yankees were unable to capitalize on any offense with only six Yankees making it on base: Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner & Fransisco Cervelli. The Tigers take the lead in the series 2-1 with the final game being played at 1:05pm. A.J Burnett will get the start.

Note: Derek Jeter has one base hit today making his magic number 47. Jeter also was taken out of the game in the eighth inning with a hip injury. Jeter is day to day; Brett Gardner and Kevin Long had worked in the cages during last weeks home stand and Gardner is an offensive threat batting 8 for 14 with a .795 on base percentage in that time span; Phil Hughes tests from St. Louis came back negative and had more tests yesterday at Columbia Presbyterian. Hughes is set to begin throwing again in 2 weeks; Alex Rodriguez is in a major slump batting 3 for his last 38. Rodriguez started slumping after his oblique injury and said that he was “cautious” at the plate.
